EMI has been invited to attend the First Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction on June 5-7, 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland. Envisioned to become the main consultative forum on disaster risk reduction at the global level, the Global Platform is a spin-off initiative of the former Inter-Agency Task Force for Disaster Reduction (IATF/DR), to which EMI was a full-time member. The multi-stakeholder Global Platform was convened to strengthen the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015, as endorsed by the U.N. General Assembly in its most recent session.
According to Mr. John Holmes, U.N. Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, a number of high-level interventions are expected on the first day of the meeting. EMI, METROPOLIS, UNDP/BCPR, UN-Habitat and the Secretariat of the ISDR will be holding a Side Event to discuss the proposal of a “Global Forum for Urban and Megacities Disaster Risk Reduction."
