Under its cooperation relationship with the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG, www.uclg.org), EMI is organizing a session on Urban Disaster Risk Reduction at the UCLG World Congress taking place in Jeju, South Korea on 28-30 October 2007.  The session's goal is to raise awareness among local authorities and to promote local action for disaster risk reduction in the context of the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action. The session will see opinions from three mayors, an expert statement and an address by Mr. Salvano Briceño, Director of the U.N. International Stragegy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) on the role of local governments in disaster risk reduction.

The Congress is expected to be attended by hundreds of mayors and leaders of local authorities and local government organizations from around the world.
