A panel session on managing disaster risk in cities was held at UCLG's 2nd World Congress in Jeju, Korea, on 30 October 2007. The session aimed to provide the venue for sharing local-level experiences on DRM, identify key issues, and present guidance to local authorities on how to address the impacts of natural hazards most effectively through local intervention and international partnerships. The session was chaired by Mr. Adam Kimbisa, mayor of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and included eight speakers composed of three mayors, one vice mayor, one city general secretary, two representatives of international organizations, and one expert.

The discussion touched on a number of issues including the importance of risk assessment, the connection of disaster risk with sustainable development, the importance of pro-active planning and rational strategies, the need to incorporate all relevant stakeholders, and the importance of sharing knowledge and experience among cities.
