On 14-22 September 2009, members of the Project Implementation Team from Kathmandu Risk-Sensitive Land Use Planning visited the Philippines to learn about Makati City’s disaster risk management initiatives, particularly the Makati Risk-Sensitive Urban Redevelopment Planning (Makati-RSURP). Both projects are joint undertakings with EMI and are funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) through the German Disaster Reduction Committee (DKKV).
Local officials from Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) met with the staff and head of the Urban Development Department who briefed them about the Makati-RSURP. They also visited Makati City’s Command, Control, and Communication Center (C3) which serves as the city’s central hub of all emergency management operations among the city units, national government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The city tour in the central business district of Makati also provided the participants with a better understanding of the urban development process that is taking place in the city.
Participants from KMC also had a chance to work with the staff and consultants of EMI in developing the alternative spatial strategies and communication strategies which are integral to the risk-sensitive land use planning process being undertaken in Kathmandu. They also met with Mr. Walter Saltzer, GTZ Program Director and Principal Adviser in the Philippines. The KMC representatives expressed their interest to collaborate with GTZ in future projects.
Overall, participants from KMC found the city-to-city sharing a big success. “It is a very fruitful visit and we were able to learn new things and perspectives from Makati City’s active role in awareness and emergency response,” says Tribhuvan Man Singh Pradhan.
