A total of 22 participants enrolled and passed World Bank Institute’s (WBI) online course on Safe Cities. This four-week specialization course, conducted from 20 July to 19 August 2009, covered disaster risk management concerns inherent to cities and urban agglomerations. The participants, along with the subject matter expert, tackled various options available to local officials and urban managers to reduce the exposure of their cities to natural hazards and limit the physical and socio-economic vulnerability of high density settlements and their communities.

About half of the participants came from non-governmental organizations while the rest is composed of urban managers, planners, and DRM professionals from local governments, national government agencies, private sector, and the academe.  Thirteen participants were Philippine nationals while nine are from other countries in Asia and Africa.

Ms. Miladee Azur from the City Government of Legaspi in the Philippines topped the class while two participants garnered the highest score in the End-of-Course Project. They are Mr. Joselito Losaria, a freelance development consultant from the Philippines and Mr. Serge Andriamandimby from Habitat for Humanity in Madagascar.

EMI is the partner organization of WBI in delivering its training courses under the Natural Disaster Risk Management Program.
