Megacity indicators system presented at Marmara Symposium
EMI partıcıpated ın the 2009 Internatıonal Earthquake Syposıum ın Kocaelı, Turkey on August 17-19. The symposium was held on the 10th anniversary commemoration of the 1999 Marmara earthquake and was an opportunity to assess how far the journey on preparedness and mitigation of earthquake risk has progressed in Turkey 10 years later. The event was attended by a wide range of stakeholders.
On the last day of the symposium, the collaborative partnership project between EMI, IMM (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality), CEDIM (Karlsruhe University) and CENDIM (Bogazici University) on Megacity Indicator Systems for Disaster Management was presented as a risk communication and planning tool. In view of the complexity of issues and sometimes conflicting interest, the MIS project was seen as a useful risk communication methodology to bring stakeholders from functional and operational areas of risk management together around one table, use interactive and easy to use software tools to communicate complex dimensions of risk and plan for allocating resources in areas of a city where they are lacking.
