A total of fourteen participants passed EMI’s distance learning courses which ran from 15 June to 17 August 2009. Seven participants have completed the MEGA-Plan and MEGA-Safe courses, respectively.

MEGA-Plan consists of seven sessions on integrating disaster risk parameters in land use planning. Majority of the participants came from upper level management and urban planning and development department of cities and municipalities within Metro Manila.

The course program and the learning platform is commendable for its first try, and it can still be improved for offering a more comprehensive course module” said Ulysses D. Ortillo Jr. from the Planning and Development Office of the City Government of Paranaque.

MEGA-Safe, on the other hand, focuses on establishing city-level organizational structures and operations for disaster and emergency management. The participants were mostly local emergency managers and responders as well as local government officials from Metro Manila.

EMI is set to launch another online course titled “Earthquake Risk Reduction” on 24 August to 23 September 2009. This course is open for those who passed the Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Framework, a course offered by EMI under World Bank Institute’s Natural Disaster Risk Management Program.
