The Prevention and Emergency Management Office (DPAE) of Bogota (Colombia) has invited EMI and members of the Americas Cluster (Mexico, Lima, Quito and Los Angeles) to participate in the city's earthquake simulation and emergency drill scheduled on October 5-12, 2009. EMI will be represented by its Chairman, Dr. Fouad Bendimerad, who will sit as an international observer and evaluator.
The activity aims to evaluate the capacity of Bogota's institutions to response to a 6.2 Magnitude earthquake, verify the validity and relevance of the city's protocols, and generate national and international inter-agency agreements to enhance institutional capacity for response. The exercise is based on an earthquake scenario that originates from the Frontal Fault on the Eastern Cordillera at a depth of 23 km, about 40 km east of Bogota. It includes several activities such as rescue in collapsed structures, hazardous materials incidents simulating chemical leaks, fire control, among others.
The earthquake drill is spearheaded by DPAE in cooperation with Colombia's National Disaster Prevention Agency (DNPAD), Bogota's Fire Department, and other relevant national (Red Cross, Civil Defense, USAR groups, government ministries) and international agencies (INSARAG, UNDAC, PAHO).
