Twelve emergency management (EM) experts gathered in a round table discussion (RTD) last 23 March 2009 at the Makati City Hall to review EMI’s online training course on City-level Disaster Management Organization and Operations. Dubbed as MEGA-Safe, the training course is tentatively set for pilot testing with local emergency managers in Metro Manila from May-June this year.
External reviewers who attended were Dr. Renato Solidum, Director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and EMI Trustee; Ms. Susan Cruz from the National Disaster Coordinating Council-Office of Civil Defense (National Capital Region); Cedric Daep, Executive Officer of Albay Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council, and representatives from the Metro Manila Development Authority and NDCC-OCD. Local governments in Metro Manila were represented by local staff from the city governments of Pasig, Marikina, and Makati while the Filipino-Chinese Fire Volunteer Auxillary Group represented non-governmental organizations. EMI was represented by Mr. Jim Buika (Course writer), Dr. Fouad Bendimerad (EMI Chairman), Atty. Violeta Seva (General Secretary), Dr. Asteya Santiago (EMI Trustee), Dr. Maricel Paringit, Ms. Nadia Pulmano and Mr. Kristoffer Berse.
The RTD participants provided substantial inputs to improve the course’s content, structure, and overall organization. They also provided recommendations for case studies and other references relevant to the topics discussed in each course module. The EMI Secretariat is now in the process of revising the draft training course based on the experts’ inputs during the RTD.
