EMI and World Bank Institute (WBI) is offering a specialized course titled Reducing Disaster Risks through Land Use Planning starting on March 23, 2009. This month-long online course is designed for planners, zoning officers, building and housing officials and other practitioners involved in land use/urban planning and disaster risk management. This is the pilot delivery of the course under WBI’s Distance Learning Program on Natural Disaster Risk Management.
The course aims to:
- Give a general background on international trends and experiences in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction objectives in land use and urban planning;
- Discuss the process of integrating disaster mitigation and local land use planning and illustrate the benefits of this integrated approach using actual examples;
- Provide a synopsis on the Philippine situation concerning the legal and institutional bases of land use planning and disaster risk management; and
- Discuss recent challenges and initiatives in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in local land use planning.
