The City Government of Makati, in cooperation with EMI, has deployed 40 survey enumerators to chart the socio-economic profiles of about 2,500 households in Brgy. Rizal, the pilot site of the Makati Risk-Sensitive Redevelopment Planning project. The survey covers four high-risk zones in the barangay (zones 7-10). It intends to document the communities’ perceptions of risk, emergency management practices, land use, and overall preparedness to natural disasters.

To prepare for the task, the survey enumerators went through a one-day training last 17 January. Organized by EMI, the training aimed to equip them with skills in conducting surveys and interviews. Part of the training was the discussion on some ethical issues such as confidentiality and informed consent which the participants found very interesting.

Most of the survey enumerators are college students who are residents of Brgy. Rizal. They are assisted by zone leaders and members of the informal sector acting as guides in entering the community.

A validation workshop will follow after the survey to assess the validity of the results and expound on topics that are not fully covered in the survey (e.g. social networks). The socio-economic data, along with the physical vulnerability index, will eventually serve as risk parameters in the redevelopment planning process.
