EMI and its partners are pooling their resources together to develop a certification program that could help raise the competency of DRM practitioners worldwide. Built on established standards in DRM practice, the certification is envisioned to attract recognition from international institutions such as the UN, World Bank and others.

To further this plan, discussions have been taking place between several potential partners in the program incuding the World Bank Institute, ProVention Consortium, UNDP/BCPR. the UN-ISDR Secretariat, Kobe University, EMI, Metropolis and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).  A pilot application is being developed with Kobe University where three staff specialists from EMI, namely EMI’s Chairman, Dr. Fouad Bendimerad, Tara L. Naguiat and Nadia Pulmano will provide lectures to the participants of the JICA-sponsored course on Mitigation Strategies for Mega-urban Earthquake Disasters offered by Kobe University in partnership with EMI. This year students in the JICA course are expected to be part of the first pilot application of the certification.

The trip is also an opportunity for EMI to promote MEGA-Plan, an online training course on risk-sensitive land use planning, and World Bank Institute’s Distance Learning Program on Natural Disaster Risk Management, to the participants of the JICA training course.
