EMI entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Makati City, Philippines on 16 January 2007, in line with the planning and implementation of an Urban Redevelopment Project by the city government. Effective until 16 January 2009, the MOU formalizes Makati's involvement as a pilot city in the joint EMI-DKKV/FAO project aimed at mitigating disaster risk in Metro Manila and Kathmandu through risk-sensitive land use planning and emergency management.
As part of the cooperation agreement, EMI will provide technical advice to Makati City in such areas as disaster risk reduction, risk assessment, urban planning, disaster risk communication, and capacity development; assist in the preparatory work; provide technical oversight; monitor the conduct of risk assessment and planning activities; and help the city seek financial assistance from its partner organizations and other financing institutions.
The MOU was signed by Dr. Fouad Bendimerad, EMI Chairman, and Hon. Jejomar C. Binay, Makati City Mayor, and sanctioned by a Resolution from the Makati City Legislative Council.
