After reviewing Kathmandu’s emergency management system and training needs in February this year, EMI is back to Nepal’s capital to provide training to Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s (KMC) newly-constituted Disaster Risk Management and Citizen’s Safety Section (DRMCS). From November 11-14, EMI’s Tara Ledesma and Jim Buika will hold a series of discussions and training sessions with DRMCS personnel, as well as with KMC and NSET-Nepal officials, covering the following:

  • Progress in institutionalizing DRMCS;
  • Training on basic concepts and principles of emergency management;
  • Proposed Emergency Management System for Kathmandu;
  • Roles of DRMCS in emergency response operations and resource requirement; and
  • Roles and responsibilities of various departments and units, gaps in resources and mechanisms in addressing gaps.

The DRMCS will be responsible for managing and promoting emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and reduction of disaster risk. It will likewise be in charge of public awareness, training and education.
