Major cities share experience in reducing disaster risk
Policymakers, practitioners and researchers from major cities around the world convene in the Los Angeles International Earthquake Conference on November 12-14, 2008 at the Omni Hotel, Los Angeles, CA, to share and discuss their experiences in dealing with urban earthquake risk, especially in the context of megacities. Jointly organized by EMI and the City of Los Angeles, the event also serves as the venue for EMI’s 2008 Americas Megacities Forum.
The conference covers topics related to disaster risk management practice and policy with separate sessions on critical lifeline facilities, disaster preparedness, land use planning, disaster management technologies, legislation and enforcement, and the future of megacities infrastructure and engineering. The program integrates the Great Southern California ShakeOut, a weeklong series of demonstrations, forums, workshops, and fieldtrips that focus on earthquake preparedness and response.
Over 80 internationally recognized scientific experts, policymakers, academics, business leaders, and disaster management practitioners have confirmed their participation to the three-day conference. Among the invited speakers are representatives of EMI’s partner cities from Asia, Europe and the Americas, which have demonstrated considerable practical experience in dealing with urban earthquake risk reduction.
