More than 230 million people suffer from natural disasters every year. With increasing urbanization and continuing intensification of patterns of risk in urban environments, the role of local authorities as the primary agents of disaster risk reduction to their cities has come to the forefront. In order to mainstream disaster risk reduction into development policies, strategies, programs and projects, local professionals working in different segments of society must have confidence and be more versed into all aspects of implementing effective risk reduction measures. Local institutions can be strengthened by training and improving the skills of city practitioners and managers, which also leads to them taking ownership over projects.
UCLG, ICLEI, Metropolis, CityNet and EMI are offering a 2-day training program on disaster risk reduction management for local professionals, managers and policy makers. The training program will be held in Sydney on the 20 and 21st October, 2008, preceding the 9th World Congress of Metropolis (October 22-25). The training program is practical and based on sound practices of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction through detailed case studies of partner cities. The 2-day training program will focus on issues such as: planning for a safe city; role of local actors; disaster preparedness measures; damage and reconstruction needs assessment; financial protection strategies for disaster risk reduction; and community-based disaster risk management. The 2-day training program is free of charge and open to 30 participantsThursday, May 17th
