Led by the UN/ISDR Hyogo Office, the Regional Task Force on Urban Risk Reduction held its first meeting in Kobe on 23-24 January 2008, then met again in Bangkok on 15 February. The key objective of the Task Force is to bring urban risk reduction to the forefront of the agenda of major disaster risk reduction initiatives in Asia and beyond.

The first meeting grouped twenty-eight participants from 14 institutions, including government agencies, the UN, international and regional organizations, universities, and NGOs participated in this brainstorming meeting and discussed the promotion of information sharing and cooperation for urban disaster risk reduction. EMI was represented by its Chairman Dr. Fouad Bendimerad.
