The First National Conference on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Local Governance was recently concluded at the Hotel Dusit in Makati City from 4-6 March 2008. EMI’s Dr. Fouad Bendimerad and Dr. Marqueza Reyes gave their presentations on “International Experiences in Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in City Planning” and “Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction,” respectively. A parallel session on best practices in DRR was also held, where Atty. Violeta Seva, EMI Secretary-General and Treasurer, sit as moderator, and Mr. Ramon Santiago, Director for Public Safety of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), presented the “Metro Manila Disaster Risk Management Plan.” The DRMMP is a framework for mainstreaming DRR at the city level developed by EMI and implemented in Metro Manila as part of the 3cd Program in collaboration with MMDA and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The conference, attended by officials from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, GTZ, DIPECHO, and national and local government officials from the Philippines, delved on issues related to the local implementation of DRR policies and activities in different parts of the country.
