An earthquake of 5.5 degrees on the open Richter scale with a depth of 3.8 kilometers was felt in Bogota, a partner city of EMI and capital of Columbia, around 2:21 in the afternoon on 24 May 2008, without serious damage for the population of the Capital District. The epicenter of the earthquakes, which generated panic among the inhabitants of tall buildings, was felt in El Calvario (Meta), three hours from the capital.
All District Systems for Prevention and Emergency management were activated by the Mayor and have established a Unified Command Post to coordinate all actions. Members of the local emergency committees, the Fire Officer Corps, the Red Cross and Civil Defense monitored the 20 localities of the city to verify if there were damages that affected the population.
