EMI kicks off GDRRR project in the Philippines

EMI is currently involved in a GFDRR project to support the DRM capacity of local governments (LGUs) in the Philippines. The project aims to help LGUs (a) reduce their vulnerabilities to natural disasters, (b) manage related risks, and (c) improve access to finance for risk mitigation and post-disaster recovery efforts. The LGUs will be identified through a risk mapping exercise and in consultation with local officials, stakeholders and concerned national government agencies.
For Phase I (5 June-31 Dec. 2008), EMI is doing a review of existing tools and models developed at the international level for local DRM mainstreaming. The output from this activity will serve as one of the bases for developing a local DRM framework in the context of the Philippines.
The results from Phase I will determine the implementation strategy for Phase II, which is expected to start in early 2009.
The GFDRR project is implemented in partnership with local research institutions in the Philppines, namely, Ateneo School of Government, Manila Observatory and the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction. The EMI Team is headed by Dr. Fouad Bendimerad as Project Director; Kristoffer Berse, Project Manager; and Marino Deocariza, Technical Lead.
