Last November 9,  EMI conducted a workshop at the library of the Rizal Elementary School in Barangay Rizal to ensure that perspectives and insights of beneficiaries and project implementers are taken into consideration in identifying programs, projects and activities for the Makati Risk-sensitive Urban Redevelopment Planning Project. The event was attended by 52 participants from Barangay Rizal, Makati City and national government, including community officials, zone leaders, non-government organizations, people’s organizations, private sector, city government officials and personnel of the Makati City government, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The EMI staff and consultants provided expert advice and facilitated the activity.

To promote community action and change, stakeholders participated in evaluating their capacity in responding to emergency situations. Recommendations for change were identified for Zones 7 to 10 of Barangay Rizal to reduce the physical vulnerability of residences, businesses and  public spaces; reduce the socio-economic vulnerability and strengthen emergency management capacity of individuals and the community.  Proposals were made for the short, medium and long term.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the Task Leader for the project, Dr. Nathaniel von Einsiedel, informed those present that the different proposals would serve as a primary reference for the discussions at the project’s next activity, the Site Planning Workshop. These activities aim to build ownership and commitment of the various stakeholders for putting into action the changes they have recommended.
