Twenty three participants find EMI’s new online course timely and relevant as many countries in Asia recover from major disasters that hit the region just recently.  The Damage and Reconstruction Needs Assessment (DRNA)  is a month-long online course, running from 5 October to 11 November 2009, that offers a set of diagnostic tools in measuring the type and extent of damage and losses from natural disasters.

The course is one of the seven specialized e-learning courses delivered by EMI under World Bank Institute’s Natural Disaster Risk Management Program.
Specifically, DRNA aims to:

  • Enhance participants’ understanding and capacity in assessing the social, economic and environmental effects of natural disasters;
  • Review methodologies and instruments used to quantify direct damages and indirect losses and the overall macroeconomic consequences of catastrophic events; and
  • Help participants determine reconstruction requirements and appropriate reconstruction programs and projects.

Majority of participants (11) come from nongovernment organizations, international development organizations, and academic institutions while the rest are from government offices (8) and the private sector (4). The 23 participants are located in 16 countries around the world including Fiji, Myanmar, Kenya, Uganda, Italy, Canada, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, the Philippines, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, United Arab Emirates and the United States of America.

They are guided by EMI’s Course Support Team composed of Ms. Julie Paran (Course Director), Mr. Victor Bawagan (Subject Matter Expert), Ms. Madel Go (Course Facilitator), Mr. Irwin Lopez (Project Manager) and Mr. Dominic Dizon (Training Assistant).
