The Philippine Office of Civil Defense (OCD) under the Department of National Defense and the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) through capacity building and advocacy for local government units (LGUs) and other public and private institutions in the country. This partnership will bring together OCD’s and EMI’s networks and expertise in the areas of natural hazards assessment and mitigation. EMI will lend its technical expertise and capacity building modules in urban disaster risk management planning, while OCD will provide the dissemination and adaptation processes most suitable to the conditions of LGU’s in the country, including awareness and advocacy campaigns. A Philippines-Indonesia partnership for sharing best practices in DRR is also being eyed, leveraging on EMI’s strong relationship with the Jakarta Provincial Government
As a kickoff activity, EMI and OCD plan to undertake a “National Summit on Urban Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation” in partnership with other relevant government partners and institutions.
