ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, together with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), will continue its advocacy efforts towards UNFCCC COP17/CMP7 through the Local Government Climate Roadmap (www.iclei.org/climate-roadmap). As a parallel process to the to the United Nations Bali Roadmap, local governments and their associations launched the Local Government Climate Roadmap at COP13, in Bali, Indonesia during December 2007. This process, initiated by ICLEI and UCLG, was set up to accompany and follow the international climate negotiations to achieve a far-reaching climate agreement which includes the legal and institutional empowerment of local and regional governments in the forthcoming global climate deal.
At the UNFCCC COP16/CMP6 in Mexico, the crucial role of both local and sub-national governments as “governmental stakeholder” was recognized in the implementation of climate action. Following on from this achievement, ICLEI and UCLG are continuing the process of advocacy and awareness raising toward the next global climate negotiations taking place at COP17/CMP7 in Durban. Please find an overview of developments of the Local Government Climate Roadmap and brief information on key outputs of Cancun here "Cancun Outcomes for Local Governments”.
With the UNFCCC COP17/CMP7 coming to Africa, ICLEI Africa has undertaken a number of initiatives to mobilise and prepare African local governments for informed engagement in the various climate advocacy processes, including the “Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2011 Congress” and “Resilient Cities 2011”. In addition, ICLEI Africa hosted a series of regional preparatory platforms with range of partners and cities across the continent, including West Africa, Southern Small Island Developing States and Namibia amongst others.
