As part of its implementation of the UNDP-supported project entitled Support Quality and Implementation of Risk-sensitive Land Use Plan in Nepal, EMI conducted its first field investigation (FI) in Kathmandu from December 3 to 9, 2011. Dr. Renan Tanhueco, EMI's Urban and Regional Land Use Expert, met with local stakeholders to gather their inputs on the Risk-sensitive Land Use Plan (RSLUP) for Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), which was developed from 2008-2010 through the efforts of EMI, the National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET), KMC and various national government institutions, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office through the German Committee for Disaster Reduction.
The stakeholders' recommendations were consolidated and incorporated into the RSLUP, which was then validated through a workshop at the Hotel Yak and Yeti on December 8, 2011. After the participants unanimously endorsed the Plan, Dr. Tanhueco and colleagues from NSET finalized the document and then transmitted the final version to UNDP on December 9, 2011. Mr. Devendra Dangol, head of KMC's Urban Development Department will facilitate the endorsement of the RSLUP to the Mayor and the local legislative body. The validation process and the stakeholder-endorsed RSLUP are prerequisites for the implementation of succeeding project activities.
This project is in support of the Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CDRMP), an initiative of the Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium. The CDRMP aims to strengthen the institutional and legislative aspects of disaster risk management (DRM) in Nepal, by building the capacities of the Ministry of Home Affairs, other ministries, and local governments. The CDRMP will also establish strategic linkages between DRM and development sectors in the Kathmandu Valley.
