An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.9 struck off the central Philippine island of Negros at 11:49 a.m. of Feb. 6, 2012. The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, prompting those living in coastal communities to seek higher ground. Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., Director of the the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake struck 5 kilometers northwest of the town of Tayasan in the province of Negros Oriental. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has reported atleast seven casualties from the quake. Initial damage reports are still starting to come in after the quake. As many as 16 aftershocks have already been felt in the region, however the tsunami warning has already been cancelled.
