Local officials of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and local DRM experts from Mumbai are currently doing a risk assessment of the different hazards that pose serious threats to Mumbai’s overall development, wellbeing and safety of its communities.
In a meeting held last 15 September 2009 at the Disaster Management Cell of the Municipal Head Office in Mumbai, the Project Implementation Team of the ‘Disaster Risk Reduction for Greater Mumbai Project’ had a meeting to mobilize different task groups in preparing risk assessment reports on the different natural and man-made hazards present in Mumbai.
Dr. Kapil Gupta and Prof. Ravi Sinha are in-charge of preparing the Flood Risk Assessment and Earthquake Risk Assessment reports, respectively. Data on major accident hazards, chemical, biological, and nuclear hazards, as well as, transport accidents, and climate-related hazards will be provided by various MCGM departments, local research centers, and scientific organizations in India.
The ‘Disaster Risk Reduction for Greater Mumbai Project’ is a 2-year collaborative undertaking between MCGM and EMI that will pave the way for the development of the Disaster Risk Management Master Plan (DRMMP) and a competent organizational structure for DRM in Mumbai. Risk assessment constitutes the second phase of the DRMMP Process—the Diagnosis and Analysis Phase—which provides better understanding of the city context and the inherent disaster risks in the city.
