EMI Executive Director Dr. Fouad Bendimerad and General Secretary Atty. Violeta S. Seva met with key officials of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) on 2-3 March 2009 to firm up the plans for the rollout of the Cross-Cutting Capacity Development (3cd) Program in Greater Mumbai come April. Through a participatory and multi-stakeholder approach, the upcoming project intends to facilitate the mainstreaming of sound disaster risk management practices within MCGM’s mandates and functions.
To promote local action and active participation of local authorities and decision makers, EMI and MCGM officials have come to an agreement to form an emergency management unit at the outset. The project organizational structure will be comprised of an EMI Project Director and a counterpart MCGM Project Director, Project Managers, MCGM department heads, a local investigator to be identified by MCGM, and other local stakeholders.
On the next day, Dr. Bendimerad and Atty. Seva paid a courtesy call to MCGM Commissioner Dr. Jairaj M. Phatak along with the members of different departments within MCGM. The Commissioner expressed his full support and was very keen on adopting the 3cd’s Disaster Risk Management master Plan (DRMMP) framework in their city.
EMI and MCGM officials will meet again to seal the agreement by the end of March.
