The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has approved the tender request for a city-wide social structure survey in relation to EMI's Megacities Indicators Project in Istanbul, Turkey. The tender was approved on January 19, 2009 with a budget of US$400,000 allocated for the survey.The survey will be used to derive data for the customized application of EMI's Megacity Indicators System (MIS, also called MEGA-Index) in Istanbul. Specifically, it covers the following indicators: Dependency, Economic Deprivation, Mobility, Healthcare Services, Risk Mitigation (structural, non-structural, financial), Risk Awareness, Social Networks/Solidarity.
The survey was developed based on a 30-point questionnaire prepared by the MIS Core Group headed by Dr. Bijan Khazai from the EMI side, and vetted in an internal workshop with IMM staff, which included social scientists from IMM strategic planning department. The first of its kind in Istanbul, the survey aims to cover 36,500 households within 170 days.
