The Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI) carried out the second field investigation towards developing the Disaster Risk Management Master Plan (DRMMP) of Greater Amman Municipality last August 18-22, 2008 in Amman, Jordan. Building from the outcomes of the first field investigation on May 2008, the second field investigation further engaged local stakeholders in identifying the elements that will constitute Amman’s DRMMP Framework. It has also become a venue to discuss the results of the seismic risk assessment that will inform the development of DRMMP. Dr. Fouad Bendimerad, EMI Chairman and Project Director, led the team with Atty. Violeta Seva (Legal and Institutional Expert), Dr. Marqueza Reyes (Land Use Planning Expert and Project Manager), Dr. Bijan Kazai (Geotechnical and Spatial Analysis Expert/Seismic Risk Analyst), and Eng. Jeannette Fernandez (DRMMP Advisor). Shirley Mattingly likewise provides her expertise and guidance on emergency management systems and legal and institutional framework for disaster risk management to the project.

During the field investigation, the participants revisited Amman’s history of dealing with disasters. They also analyzed the present needs and challenges of the City and came up with steps towards developing Amman’s DRMMP, through a Future Search methodology.

The series of field investigations is part of the Cross-Cutting Capacity Development (3cd) Program in Amman, which is supported by the UNDP Jordan Country Office, UNDP Bureau of Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR), the Kingdom of Jordan and the Greater Amman Municipality.
