Mr. Dieter Farrenkopf, a member of the scientific advisory board of the Deutsches Komitee Katastrophenvorsorge e.V. (DKKV) visited the EMI Secretariat Office in Manila from 25-27 March 2009 for a mission review of EMI’s “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Megacities: Pilot Application in Kathmandu and Metro Manila.”  The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) through the DKKV.

The three-day mission review began with a project briefing of the four project components: 1) Kathmandu Risk-Sensitive Land Use Planning, 2) Kathmandu Emergency Management, 3) Makati Risk-Sensitive Urban Redevelopment Planning, and 4) Metro Manila Training Needs Assessment.

On the second day, the City Government of Makati and the Barangay government of Rizal took lead in presenting the project outputs to Mr. Farrenkopf. Six project clusters reported on their accomplishments, challenges encountered, and action plans. A number of city departments and units were also represented in the meeting. Overall, the DKKV representative is impressed with the progress of the project. “The public perception that natural disaster is an act of God is over,” said the DKKV representative.

On the third day, Mr. Farrenkopf joined the Project Implementation Team (PIT) in organizing and analyzing the results of a hazard mapping exercise conducted prior to the mission review.

“If we are all working together for this project, how can we fail?” said Ms. Constancia Lichauco, Director of the Liga ng mga Barangay (Barangays’ League of Makati City).

EMI’s overall goal of reducing disaster risk in large urban areas is aligned with DKKV's goal of making disaster reduction an integral part of approaches and action in the political, scientific and social spheres. DKKV is working in close cooperation with national, European and international institutions under the auspices of the UN's International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR).
