EMI, in partnership with the City Government of Los Angeles, organized the Americas Megacities Forum last November 12-14 in Los Angeles, California, USA.Policymakers, practitioners and researchers from major cities around the world convenedto share their experiences in dealing with urban earthquake risk. The Forum, which also doubled as LA’s International Earthquake Conference, was part of EMI’s annual regional activity under its Cluster Cities Project (CCP).
EMI’s General Secretary Atty. VioletaSeva made a presentation on the Challenges in Formulating and Implementing Seismic Safety Regulations in the Philippines. Mr. Xenon Walde, head of the Urban Development Division of Makati City, Philippines, shared the city’s risk-sensitive urban redevelopment planning project—a joint undertaking of EMI and the City Government of Makati, under the auspices of the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) through the German Disaster Reduction Committee (DKKV). The projectaims to reduce the physical, social, and economic vulnerability of the city to earthquake-related hazards.
