More than 60 cities across the world will be gathering in Sydney for the World Congress of Metropolis on October 22-25, 2008. The Congress will bring together international and Australian mayors, government officials, academics and industry leaders to share experience and expertise around some of the key issues facing cities including climate change, urban renewal, financing public infrastructure and services and city leadership.
The Congress's overall theme is 'Connecting Cities' highlighting the increasing importance of cities, more so than nations, as principal hubs of international interaction.
A list of experts and scholars, from both overseas and Australia, and particularly those with a demonstrated grasp of workable ideas and of contemporary issues facing cities, are being invited to speak and participate in the Congress. Atty. Violeta Seva, EMI’s General Secretary, will introduce EMI’s Megacities Indicators System (MEGA-Index)—a risk communication and planning tool designed for policy makers and DRM specialists. MEGA-Index is used to illustrate urban seismic risk as well as to benchmark and measure disaster risk management performance of megacities.
