In a renewal of a cooperation agreement between EMI and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), a multi-institutional project related to the implementation of Megacity Indicator Systems (MEGA-Index) in Istanbul was officially initiated at a workshop at AKOM (IMM Disaster Management Center). On 17-18 December 2007, an international group of experts from EMI, Karlsruhe University's Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technologies (CEDIM) and Bogazici University's Center for Disaster Management (CENDIM) met with a local core group of technical staff and officials at the Municipality of Istanbul, and advised them on selection of indicators relevant to the context of Istanbul. The local core group along with a project coordinator from EMI has been working since early November of 2006 identifying indicators of physical risk, social vulnerability and coping capacity in Istanbul, development of the data and understanding the model and methodology.
