BackgroundThe Kathmandu Risk-Sensitive Land Use Planning aims to mainstream disaster risk reduction in the development strategies and legislations of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) through the development of a risk-sensitive land-use plan, advocacy campaigns, policy formulation, inter-institutional coordination and strengthening of local institutions. The overall goal of the Project is to ensure that the detailed land use plan of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) fully integrates disaster risk reduction within its spatial and physical development strategies including regulatory and non-regulatory planning tools, bylaws, regulations and procedures. Specifically, the Project aims to provide technical assistance to the Urban Development Department of KMC in terms of incorporating risk information and parameters in KMC’s planning process and procedures. ActivitiesThe activities completed for Phase 1 include preparatory work (data collection, research and analysis of available documentation), creation of a project team, coordination with KMC and National Society of Earthquake Technology, and field investigation. Phase 2 activities include formulation of the KMC risk-sensitive land use plan, advocacy campaigns, drafting of zoning ordinance, inter-institutional coordination, and strengthening of local institutions.
